Prerequisites

Before you become a plastic surgeon, you would first need to be a physician. Different training programs for surgery are provided by the American Board of Plastic Surgery for you to have board certification. However, as a physician you must first finish a specialized post-graduate training program that lasts from 5-7 years. Applying for a program like this would entail you to have background training that is usually based on general surgery, otherwise in ENT or orthopaedics. After this training course, your final 2 or 3 years would be held in an approved training center of plastic surgery.

Surgeons Vs. Plastic Surgeons

You should also take note that only surgeons that passed the Plastic Surgery Board exam are the only ones that have the right to have the term "Plastic" carried along with their titles. Thus, in preparation to this board exam, you would have to pass numerous practical, written and oral examinations. A lot of surgeons tend to use the term "Plastic" loosely, which has been a problem in the medical field for quite some time already. However, you should understand that such exemplars are not to be followed. If you really want to become a plastic surgeon, then you should work hard for it and earn the title by passing the board exam.
