What Would You Do

A dental hygienist is somewhat similar to a dentist, but with a number of restrictions. This field of work is mainly focused on maintaining the dental hygiene of the patient. • Case History - You would be the one to collect information regarding the patient's medical and oral health history
• Check Up - You would be the one to examine patient's teeth and gums along with their head and neck to see whether there are abnormalities and potential health problems
• Cleaning - You would be the one to remove patient's plaque, calculus, and stains from overall teeth surface
• Maintenance - You would also be the one to apply preventative materials, like fluorides and sealants to the patient's teeth
• Radiologist - You would also learn how to take dental x-rays and be the one to develop them.
• Education - As a hygienist, you would have to teach your patients how to have good oral hygiene. You would also teach them about appropriate nutrition that would benefit their oral structures.

Getting Into A Program

Nowadays, there are a lot of programs for this kind of profession. In these programs you would learn the basics of dental hygiene. Here, they would teach you methods on how you could provide essential support to a dental practice by executing patient care, along with laboratory and administrative duties. Your classes usually happen in a clinical setting, where you would learn how to assist a dentist throughout the patient evaluation and treatment processes. You would also get to know how you could ready patients for their treatment, obtain dental records, and perform routine cleanings and oral exams.

A program would introduce you to different dental terminologies and anatomical parts related to the profession. You would also be taught about: preventive dentistry, dental diseases, nutrition, radiology, pathology and anesthesiology. As a dental hygienist, you should learn how to maintain an environment that is sterile. Hence, you would also learn how to sterilize dental equipment and organize and provide instruments in trays to the dentist for medical procedures.

Prerequisites

Getting into a program like this usually entails you to take up subjects in general education, basic sciences, dental science ad dental emergency. Basically, general education would include English, psychology, speech and sociology; such courses are part of all kinds of program curricula. Under basic sciences, you would have to take courses in general chemistry, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry, nutrition, pathology and pharmacology.

These would serve as your foundation in understanding how the human body works. You would then take specialized courses under dental science, which include: head, neck and dental anatomy; oral pathology, histology, periodontology, radiology, dental materials and pain control.
