Laser Eye Surgery
Laser or LASIK eye surgery is a popular vision correcting procedure that was developed by a Greek named Ioannis Pillakaris around 1991.
LASIK, or Laser in situ Keratomileusis, is a process of using laser beams to reshape the cornea via underneath the corneal flap. An excimer laser is designed especially to improve vision, to treat refractive errors and to eliminate or reduce the need for contact lenses or glasses.
How LASIK works
Using a microkeratome, a qualified eye surgeon makes thin and precise hinged corneal flap. The flap is pulled to expose the corneal tissue and with the use of an excimer laser, the cornea is reshaped.
The corneal flap is gently repositioned on the cornea minus the sutures.
Refractive errors that LASIK can treat
- Nearsightedness or Myopia - is a condition wherein the eye length and focusing power causes blurriness for distant objects and clearer for near objects
- Farsightedness or Hyperopia - is a condition wherein the eye length and focusing power causes blurriness to near objects and clearer for distant objects
- Astigmatism - is a condition wherein the lens or corneal shape is distorted, causing multiple retinal images. All objects from different distances appear blurry.
Recovery from LASIK Eye Surgery
People who underwent LASIK eye surgery usually have short recovery period. Protective eye shields are recommended for the first up to the second night after the surgery.
Your eye surgeon may prescribe you to take an anti-inflammatory or antibiotic. Dark eyeglasses and moistening drops for the eyes are also recommended during the recovery stage to protect the eyes.
There are complications that may occur during a LASIK eye surgery. However, majority of the LASIK patients can return to their normal daily routine and/or work the next day.
Post-surgical pain or discomfort is generally minimal and follow-up exams should be made after the surgery. It is recommended that a patient should sleep right after their LASIK eye surgery to minimize pain. Once the patient wakes up, improved vision is noticeable.
